About Us

us

I arrived in Crete years ago for what was meant to be a two-week holiday. It’s still the longest two weeks of my life. I never actually left. I found work in the tourist trade and stayed in it long enough to see it from the inside: the routines, the shortcuts, the same six stories told to every bus of visitors regardless of what they’d actually want to know. Long enough to be convinced there had to be a better way of doing this.

That conviction is where everything here started. Not a business plan, not a gap-in-the-market spreadsheet, just years of watching what tourism in Crete usually gives people, and knowing we could give them something closer to the real thing.

Everything on this site, the audio tours, the app, the walks, the routes we’ve mapped and the stories behind them, we built ourselves, from nothing. The research, the writing, the walking of every path more times than I can count: that part has been my work. Every tour exists because I went and found it, checked it, and wrote it up in a way I’d actually want to read myself.

“We didn’t come to this as outsiders with a business idea. We came to it after years actually working in Crete’s tourist trade — long enough to know exactly what it was missing.”

None of it would exist in its current form without Anoushka. She’d already spent her own years in the tourism industry and had come to a lot of the same conclusions I had, from a different angle, which is how we ended up talking about this in the first place. When we started building Magical Crete, she was the one who kept the whole thing steady: pulling me back from my own worst instincts (occasionally, literally, after I’d done some damage to myself chasing down a route), and making sure enthusiasm didn’t run ahead of good sense. Ask her about it and she’ll wave it off, tell you it was nothing, that I’d have managed fine. I wouldn’t have, not as well, and not in one piece. Anoushka has been my Guardian Angel through all of it, equal parts co-founder, conscience, and the person who talks me out of my worst ideas.

We’re not offering this because it’s a nice idea. We’re offering it because we spent years watching visitors get the packaged version of Crete, and we knew from experience, not from guesswork that people wanted more than that, if only someone would build it. So we did.

That’s the short version: two people who’d done the tourism job long enough to know what was missing, and decided to build the alternative ourselves rather than wait for someone else to. Everything you’ll find here, every tour, every story, every route came out of that.
